Rolando
Gonzalez was a fourth round draft pick for the Miami Twins in
the Fall 1995 Free Agent Draft. Although he was picked
in the fourth round, he was actually on most people's board
as a first rounder. He dropped to the third round
because he was a package that came along with 3 other
players. Most teams did not have a need for 4 players
let alone 5 which is what ultimately happened with Roly.
Roly brought with him, a catcher (Jairo Arauz), a pitcher (Moises
Gomes), an infielder (Mario Gomez) and an outfielder (Leo
Rayo). That was good enough for Manager Dean Cosme.
From the
beginning of the Fall 1995 season, it was evident that Roly
was not your typical player. Roly was the league's
legitimate 5 tool player. Playing centerfield, Roly
could hit. He could hit for power. He could run.
He was a base stealer and his speed was a major asset to his
defense which was far superior to most. He had a canon for
an arm that was not only fast but accurate as well.
Roly had a
passion for the game that most people wished they could
have. He was a winner and he wanted to win. He
passion rubbed off on most and it made his teammates better.
Even in the Fall 1996 season in which he was not playing as
well as he was accustomed to, his passion for the game
elevated his teammates to new levels. His leadership
commanded respect and he willed his team to the SFBL Fall
1996 MABL Championship Game. The Miami Mets ultimately
fell short of the championship, but it wasn't because of a
lack of desire.
Roly's rookie
season stunned the SFBL and made everyone take notice of the
Miami Twins. Roly led the league in 5 offensive
categories, a feat that would not be duplicated for another
20 seasons/10 years. Roly went on to take another
stolen base title in the Spring 1997 season and a HR title
during his stint with the Miami Orioles. |
